Migraine VS Headaches

Migraines are typically thought of as a severe headache, but headaches are only one symptom of migraines. Migraines are a type of headache disorder that can cause severe pain and multiple other symptoms. Most people who suffer from migraines learn triggers that cause them to reoccur. Unlike headaches, migraines become intense, throbbing headaches that can last from only a couple hours to multiple days.

Triggers for Migraines

Many people who suffer from migraines do not have a single occurrence. There are typically triggers that could cause a migraine to develop; they differ from person to person. The most basic triggers could be:

  • Medications
  • Stress and life events
  • Poor sleep/ lack of sleep
  • Obesity
  • Caffeine

Symptoms

Just as the triggers range from person to person, the symptoms of migraines do as well. The most common symptoms range from:

  • Auras (seeing flashing lights, colors, lines, or shadows)
  • Severe throbbing pain on one or both sides of your head
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Vertigo
  • Tingling in your face, hands, or feet

Treatment

Taking care of yourself could prevent your migraines from turning into a long-term problem. Your life choices and habits serve as the building blocks for your health. Here are some helpful tips to prevent migraines from occurring, or at least lessen the frequency:

  1. Aim for 8 hours of sleep each night.
  2. What you put into your body directly affects everything about you.
    • Remember, while caffeine can soothe your pain, stopping it suddenly is a common cause of migraines.
    • Other typical food triggers include MSG (monosodium glutamate), nitrates in cured meats like hot dogs, artificial sweeteners, and alcohol.
    • Do your best to eat around the same time each day.
  3. Tension and stress are common triggers. Attempt to eliminate as much pressure as possible and take the time to practice self-care.
  4. Staying fit and exercising can lessen your chances of obesity, a common reason for chronic migraines.
  5. Know your triggers.
  6. Don’t wait to seek help. There is no logical reason to suffer from something that is commonly treated and managed. The earlier you receive your diagnosis, the sooner treatment can begin, and the sooner you have your life back.
